9/11 Memorial:
Survivor Tree Sapling

The 9/11 Remembrance Foundation of South Carolina had the opportunity to accept a 9/11 Memorial survivor tree sapling which is now planted at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.

The Survivor Tree sapling is presented by Tom Resta, who lost his brother in the September 11th attacks, and Cherie Faircloth-Resta.

The Callery Pear tree sapling, or Bradford Pear tree, is planted on the grounds of the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center close to the Midlands First Responders and Military Service Members Memorial.

“We are honored to receive this donation of a Survivor Tree on behalf of South Carolina Midlands. It is a great honor to be among numerous cities across the United States to memorialize the fallen in the September 11th attacks. We hope that this tree will continue to remind our community and help us embody ‘We Must Never Forget.” said Founder and Chairman Daniel Hennigan.

The Survivor Tree Seedling program began in 2013 and the 9/11 Memorial presents three seedlings per year to communities that have endured tragedy in recent years. After the attacks on September 11th, 2001, the Callery Pear remained upright at the scene of the original World Trade Center. Though beaten and battered, the tree was rehabilitated and replanted in December of 2010, standing as a symbol of hope and resiliency. Its seedlings are nurtured into trees and shared across the United States.
